Ceramica Artistica Solimene is the best-known ceramics manufacturer in Vietri sul Mare, the town at the eastern end of the Amalfi Coast whose ceramic tradition, according to the company, goes back to the 15th century. Vincenzo Solimene, whose family has worked with ceramics for more than a century, has been active in Vietri since 1947.
In 1951 he commissioned the architect Paolo Soleri to design a new factory, completed in 1954. The architecture register of the Italian Ministry of Culture calls it Soleri's only work on Italian soil. Cone-shaped structures lean outwards, more than 16,000 red and green ceramic vessels are set into the facade, and inside, a continuous ramp links four levels. The ground floor was intended for direct sales from the start.
The workshop makes tableware, floor and wall tiles, home objects and tables. According to the company, everything is made and painted by hand using traditional techniques such as the potter's wheel, and finished with lead-free glazes, so the tableware is dishwasher-safe. Custom pieces are made on request, for hotels and restaurants for example, and the manufacturer exports worldwide.
The visit is worthwhile for anyone interested in both ceramics and architecture. As the website gives no opening hours, call ahead before your visit to ask when the shop is open. You can read more about the craft of the region in the article on Italian craftsmanship.
